Good Design at Chipotle

making changes work
Posted by Jacob on April 10, 2007

Erin and I had Chipotle on Saturday. The food was great as usual, but there was a new thing that made me smile.

I paid with a Credit Card and the receipt spit out towards me not back at the cashier.

It makes a lot more sense that way, why should they tear of the receipt and then hand it to me? They key to this working was the cashier telling me where the receipt came out.

Moving the receipt from behind the counter is more efficient, but for a while that cashier is going to have to tell people 100 times a day where the receipt spit out. But over time people will expect the receipt on their side.

So the moral, don’t be afraid to make big changes, but if you do be ready to help people figure them out until they get used to it.

  1. This is so sweet. Reminds me of my delight when at Trader Joes, the pass the cart on the side of the cashier so I don’t have to unload everything on a conveyor belt. :)
