Act now and you’ll also receive …

Posted by Jeff on January 31, 2007

Act now and you’ll also receive … seems like everyday language to those of us in the Marketing field. But as far as catchphrases go, this ranks among one of the best. Everyone knows it and you hear it at least once a day. In today’s world catchphrases are gold and are either well thought out or completely accidental.

The multi-touch screen

Posted by Rhea on January 29, 2007

Maybe the iPhone presentation has points for demo (stage) production quality, but I thought this was similarly mind-boggling. In this video, Jeff Han and Phil Davidson show off a door-sized flat panel computer monitor. More than a living room device to watch widescreen movies from, this computer screen is setting the pitch for change in the way we interact with computers. Adam Penenberg from Fast Company wrote an article recapping the original presentation of the technology at the 2006 TED conference, documenting audience response that you will probably resonate with after watching.

P.S. Watch out for the portion where they pull up wikipedia.com. It astounds me how tiny 1024 pixels looks. :o)

Devotionals 1/29/07

Today we read from Proverbs, a passage which contains our company verse - Pr. 21:31. This is the New American Standard translation.

“He who loves pleasure will become a poor man; he who loves wine and oil will not become rich.
The wicked is a ransom for the righteous, and the treacherous is in the place of the upright.
It is better to live in a desert land than with a contentious and vexing woman.
There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man swallows it up.
He who pursues righteousness and loyalty finds life, righteousness and honor.
A wise man scales the city of the mighty and brings down the stronghold in which they trust.
He who guards his mouth and tongue, guards his soul from troubles.
‘Proud,’ ‘Haughty,’ ‘Scoffer,’ are his names, who acts with insolent pride.
The desire of the sluggard puts him to death, for his hands refuse to work; all day long he is craving, while the righteous gives and does not hold back.
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination, how much more when he brings it with evil intent!
A false witness will perish, but the man who listens to the truth will speak forever.
A wicked man displays a bold face, but as for the upright, he makes his way sure.
There is no wisdom and no understanding and no counsel against the LORD.
The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but victory belongs to the LORD.”
(Proverbs 21: 17-31, NASV)

Confessions of a Non-Techie — Part 2

Posted by Katy on January 25, 2007

Welcome back!
So, last week I conceded that I use my fair share of technology. Why, then, am I being left further and further behind in a storm of Blackberries, Blueteeth, phones that are smaller than a credit card, and everything else that I don’t even know enough about to know that I don’t know it? Link Roundup, January 25

c|net on Generation We: A short article about how the people of tomorrow are growing up. If you thought “young people” today, meaning people like me in their 20s and early 30s were media and marketing savvy - you ain’t seen nothing net. It’s time to get authentic.

Convio on Nonprofit Benchmarks: Registration is required to download these 17 page PDF, but it is interesting. The report looks at a number of vertical markets including the Christian market. The short version is that compared to other vertical markets, like Environmental or Health, the Christian market has better metrics almost across the board.

Nehemiah 8:9-12 (New King James version)

“And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, ‘This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn nor weep.’ For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

Then he said to them, ‘Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do no sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.’

So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, ‘Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.’

And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them.”

(Nehemiah 8:9-12, NKJV)

As a side note, I would recommend that you take the time to read the whole chapter in context. It’s actually very interesting when you have a little more of the history.

Additionally, make sure to keep checking out the Devotionals posting, as there’s a chance we might be having a new style to our Monday Morning Devotion time in the future.

Confessions of a Non-Techie — Part 1

Posted by Katy on January 19, 2007

When it comes to technology, there’s jumping on the bandwagon, and then there’s missing the boat completely. Unfortunately, I think I fall under the latter category. You may wonder why someone who works at a fairly technologically intensive company has little understanding of it, however that is because, simply enough, I do not have a technological job. I don’t have to understand technology, I just have to be able to use it. This gives me a unique perspective amongst people who are so used to building technology and finding the newest of the new that they don’t have any problem using or understanding it. (Although admittedly, no one can avoid the occasional server/internet provider/system crash and all the trials and tribulations thereof.) When I thought about writing this I came up with a lot of different topics. So I split this into several parts, and I’ll post one a week. First I wanted to share my own likes and dislikes about what technology I use everyday, and a little bit of my background in technology.

Where’s Silasman?

Posted by Rhea on January 19, 2007

Introducing SupermanYou gotta understand, our company is made up of very competitive folk. Everything from guessing a baby’s birth weight, to eating cupcakes, to the NCAA March Madness…somehow we turn every day things into a competitive sport.

It’s funny how these internal competitions are really about the fun that comes from winning. I say that because the prizes are pretty…let’s just say…symbolic. We compete, not for money or gift cards, but the prestige of being able to display a plastic trophy on our desk.
